White As Snow
By Rev. Brian L. Kachelmeier
Oh, how beautiful the landscape looks when it is covered in freshly fallen snow! Like a master piece finished by the hands of a gifted artist, the scene cries out that all creation is the work of the hand of the Divine Creator. For this reason, there are many different man made religions that hold to a belief in a so-called “Nature’s God.”
However, that same white and pure snow, quickly becomes dirty, slushy, icy, and even deadly. Try spending a weekend in the snowy mountains without any heat or winter clothes. Then you will feel the effects of living in a fallen creation. The end result is death. If we were left to merely a natural knowledge of the character of God, we would only know of a distant omnipotent Being. Apart from the Bible, we could only ascertain from creation that there is a Creator.
But, the Lord our God, wanted to reveal to us His compassion, love, and mercy. For that reason, He continues to speak to us in His church. The Word of God has been handed down to us in written form so that we would believe in Jesus and in Him have life. The Holy Scriptures reveal to us that the Creator took upon creation in order to be our Redeemer. It teaches us that Jesus is both fully God and fully man. It promises us that in Christ we are a new creation.
For all of us who have been baptized, we have been united into Christ’s death and raised to newness of life. In holy baptism, God has used water, not in a frozen form to harm us, but in a liquid form to wash us clean and make us as white as snow.
